What must I do to become a Christian?

Erika and Ben were asked to answer this question. Here is their response.

Erika and I had a field day discussing this, particularly since we are at the two extreme brackets of the age spectrum: Young adult with her life before her and a senior man entering his autumn years.
So here are the points we found relevant:

The first thing is what is a Christian?

We agreed that it has something to do with Christ.

Acts 11:26  When he ( Barnabas) found him (Paul), he brought him to Antioch, and for a whole year they were guests of the church and taught many people. It was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians.

Also read: Acts 26:28 and I Peter 4:16

So, a Christian is a follower or disciple of Christ. These disciples gather together in a church to praise and worship Christ whom they believe has risen from the dead.

Why should you believe in Jesus?

•    We should look at our personal lives. Do we suffer from loneliness, sadness, depression, fear, anger, greed etc?
•    Are we unable to control ourselves when these things come over us?
•    Do we feel bad about these but cannot seem to do anything right?
•    Have we received various advice from different people but nothing seems to work?

So, what can help?

Rom 7:24  What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is infected by death?
Rom 7:25  Thank God through Jesus the Messiah, our Lord, because with my mind I myself can serve the Law of God, even while with my human nature I serve the law of sin.
See also: Mat 11:28  "Come to me, all of you who are weary and loaded down with burdens, and I will give you rest.

The world is filled with wars, violence, corruption, deceit, murder etc. These begin in the hearts of people because of envy, hatred, greed, pride, evil passions, loneliness. etc.

So how do you become a Christian?

Rom 10:9  If you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

So why Jesus specifically?

In the history of mankind Jesus stands out completely above all of them:

His life was unique:

Completely blameless and sinless;

Compassionate; full of love; unselfish; has miraculous healing powers; was obedient to the will of God unto death.

Although born in Palestine in a humble family, today, nearly 2 000 years after he had lived, billions still believe in Him;

He claimed:
•    He is the Son of God;
•    He has and gives eternal life;
•    Before Abraham was born He has been living;
•    All the heroes throughout life had a spot of weakness. Jesus have none.
•    He delivers on His promises.
•    He died on the Cross and rose from death to eternal life.

Joh 3:16  "For this is how God loved the world: He gave his unique Son so that everyone who believes in him might not be lost but have eternal life.
Joh 14:6  Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Joh 8:12  Later on Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Through His death on the Cross Jesus took our problems, obstacles and became our Saviour so we can have the abundant life.

So, if we accept Him and acknowledge our need and confess our sins, He is willing and able to forgive us and accept us.

What happens once we have accepted Jesus?

If we accept Jesus His Holy Spirit will work through us to do good works among people to the glory of God.
Mat 5:16  In the same way, let your light shine before people in such a way that they will see your good actions and glorify your Father in heaven."

If we accept Jesus we will have a clean and better life. His light will shine through us and we can be an example for the world.
Mat 5:14  "You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can't be hidden.
